What is Farmhouse Decor? How do I Create it?

Updated: Sep 9, 2023

Farmhouse decorating is a style of home decor that is simple, warm with natural textures, materials and mostly neutral in colors Although you can certainly pop your own colors in the room in small amounts and still have a Farmhouse look! One example is adding pops of color such as Red Hens, or Yellow Sunflowers. Often Farmhouse Decor includes repurposed and reclaimed items, many will have a distressed or warn look, metal, galvanized steel, wood, etc. What is Farmhouse Decor? It's vintage charm from the farmhouse! It's a very calming palette, which many of us need after a hard day at work! Some of the best examples can be seen on HGTV's Fixer Upper show where Chip and Joanna Gaines helped to make it so very popular. They have a website where they sell items, https://magnolia.com, if their price point is too steep you can make your own items. Click here for over 1400 items at Hobby Lobby , Michaels also offers a lot, they do not have a category for it though. To DIY items for your home you can go to flea markets, garage sales, even Goodwill may have something, as long as the item you buy has good bones, you can then repaint or repurpose it. Here are some tips for repurposing:

  1. Clean & Degrease the object

  2. Prime the object with good house primer paint.

  3. Furniture paints can be any kind of acrylic really.

  4. #Distressing furniture, there are three very common methods: Sanding off the paint just enough to see the color underneath. Glazing, which is applying a different color wax to the either the cracks and edges, or the raised parts, to highlight the design of the wood. Crackle finish.

You can find more instructions on how to distress wood here.
